Dell laptop connected to wireless network, but IE and Firefox not working

Post by Desmo on 12th May 2010, 5:50 pm

Hi! I have a new(used) Dell Latitude D800. It has a fresh install of Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3.
I successfully got it connected to my wireless network, but when I try to use IE or Firefox, they say I am not connected.

I actually did get it to work, for one day, by going into IE, LAN Settings, and checking Automatically detect settings. First thing I did was download the free trial of Norton 360 antivirus software. I thought I was set, but the next day, IE wouldn't work again.

I have read all kinds of posts about similar situations and here is what I've tried without success:

Ran Windows diagnostic, but I get a message that Windows does not manage your wireless network. This is as far as it will go. (I use an Airport Extreme and currently have two computers that have no issues connecting and browsing - one is an Apple and one not.) The computer shows two connections, the fist is listed as 1394 Connection 6, 1394 Net Adaptor #7 and Wireless Network Connection 5, Dell True Mobile WLAN Mini-PCI Card #2. Signal strength is high.

Uninstalled the antivirus software, restarted and no change.

Turned off the firewall protection, no success. Reset the firewall, no success.

In IE, I went into LAN settings and tried combinations of un-selecting Automatically detect settings, and putting in IP addresses and each time restarting IE, but nothing seams to work. I also went into the advanced tab and selected reset and restarted IE, but no change.

I installed Firefox and got the message that it can not connect.

I don't know what else to try. I did read something about Winsock, but I don't know what that is. I am really a Mac user, but need the IBM compatible to run some software for certain devices. I would really appreciate any advice you may have as I am totally frustrated.

Thanks!
