Infected PC, cannot open any programs/internet

Post by dynasty404 on Fri Apr 30, 2010 7:04 pm

Firstly, I am asking this from a remote laptop, as I cannot access any website or email from my infected pc. So I cannot scan with OTL, or check for my version of Java etc.
Whatever I click on, I get msgs like ‘the file avgupd.exe is infected,’ or ‘the file googletoolbaruser_32.exe is infect.’ I cannot get to use Word or Excel either. Whatever I click it comes back with a, this is infected, and doesn't open.
I get popup windows that just appear saying ‘attention! Spyware alert.’ Plus others asking me to scan for viruses, but they are not from AVG or Microsoft. Even when I close them down, they still popup again.
How do I perform a HiJackThis log file, on the affected pc when I cannot access any website.

Many thanks

Gareth

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hi

I cannot download OLT or anything else from the infected pc, as it will not let me visit any website. If I download OLT to this laptop, the virus might infect everything else on the memory stick that I transfer it with. Is this correct?

In theory it's possible, but I doubt it, not many USB infections have been going around lately.

I transfered OTL.exe okay via the memory stick to the pc. But when I double clicked on it. I then clicked on the 'allow' button which pops up with MS Vista. The OTL screen flashes up for one second, then closes. And I now have a window saying 'The file otl.exe is infected. Do you want to activate you antivirus software now?
Is there anyway of performing a test via Safe Mode?

Hello.

We need to use the RKill Tool by Grinler

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Please Download Rkill.com. Save it to your Desktop.
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] if you are not sure how.

  • NOTE: If you are unable to connect to the site to download rkill, then you should download it to a clean computer and copy it to the infected one via a USB flash drive or CDROM.

  • Once it is downloaded, double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs.
  • Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them.
  • When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step.
NOTE: If you get a message that rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by the rogue program, when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close Rkill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue program. So, please try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the steps.

If you continue having problems running rkill.com, you can download:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
which are renamed copies of rkill.com, and try them instead.

Please download exeHelper from one of the two links.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Try OTL now.

Hello
Very sorry for late reply. I’ve been away for the past two days. I downloaded RKill like you told me to. I then went to switch my infected pc on, ready to transfer it via a USB stick. I noticed that the usual automatic pop-ups were not happening. Saying your computer is infected etc. So, before I run RKill, I decided to try OTL.exe again. And amazingly this worked! So please find below the two reports. As I type this, I am currently running the AVG (free) Anti-Virus scan, and the Windows Defender scan, on the infected pc. They haven’t finished yet, so I don’t know what the final result will be for both these scans yet. Anyway, here are the two reports below: -

Hello

Firstly, I really do appreciate all the help you are giving me. This is invaluable. After running all what you have asked me to run. When I open Windows Explorer (on the infected pc), when I try and access ‘any’ website, I get a reply from MS saying ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.’ And I then run the diagnose connection problems. I then get a pop-up window saying, ‘[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is not set up to establish a connection on port “world wide web service (http) with this computer.” It then goes onto say, “verify the current proxy server configuration.”

Is a proxy server (from a malware point of view) a way of “them” copying or viewing what you view on the web. So if you do any online banking etc., they then have your passwords and account details to then use to their advantage.

No, a proxy can be used to control your surfing, but this proxy we usually see is a fake, it's set to 127.0.0.1 which is localhost.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Run ESET Online Scan
Please do an online scan with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  • Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click on the Start button next to it.
  • When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
  • You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
  • Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  • After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
  • Check (tick) Remove found threats box.
  • Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
  • Click on Scan.
  • It will start scanning. Please be patient.
  • Once the scan is done, the log will be saved here: C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt.

Hello

Not sure if this is right, as this was the only thing in the log.txt. The scan did pick-up four trojans, all of which were quarantined and deleted successfully. And I have turned the proxy off as well.

Hello

I have uninstalled all the programs you list except one. When I came to uninstall Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1, I received the following message. Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact you support personnel for assistance. Then an Okay button to close the popup window.
Is it the ESET Online Scan that you want me to run again?

Hello

Is it okay if I download Windows Installer 4.5 from Microsoft's website and try again to remove Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1?

Re: Infected PC, cannot open any programs/internet

Hello

I have rerun the ESET Online Scan over the weekend and this is the result from the log.txt.

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

It also said that no viruses were found. Does this mean my pc is clear?

Hi

Well it's not running slower than before. Also there are no extra bookmarks that have appeared, and my mouse hasn’t changed its appearance.

Hello

I have purchased McAfee and installing it on both my desktop and laptop. So hopefully I shouldn't have this problem again.

I take it that's a good thing? Goofy Run a Mcafee scan, just make sure we haven't missed anything.
