Someone is sending out emails using my email name

Post by racafrustrated on 10th April 2010, 5:00 pm

Someone is sending out junk emails with attachments using my email name to all of my contacts in my windows live mail account. Not sure what to do. I updated all the information from "Read This Before Posting" and have included the hijackthis printout below. Can you help fix this problem?

Thanks, racafrustrated.

Re: Someone is sending out emails using my email name

Post by Dr Jay on 11th April 2010, 9:47 am

Please run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy and paste in the following:

    :otl
    O33 - MountPoints2\{128b75ab-9a4c-11dc-b719-0007e9b60959}\Shell - "" = AutoRun
    O33 - MountPoints2\{128b75ab-9a4c-11dc-b719-0007e9b60959}\Shell\AutoRun - "" = Auto&Play
    O33 - MountPoints2\{128b75ab-9a4c-11dc-b719-0007e9b60959}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = F:\LaunchU3.exe -- File not found
    @Alternate Data Stream - 88 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Shortcut to WP.EXE.pif:SummaryInformation

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Note: The fix for OTL automatically hides your Desktop and Start menu so the fix can be completed. Do not be alerted, this is normal.
  • Please do not exit the program. It might take a while to fix, but allow it to run. If it asks to reboot the computer, allow it to reboot. If the program freezes, and the computer fails to reboot - let me know.
Lastly, post the contents of the log. (Located at C:\_OTL\Moved Files)

=======================

Please visit this webpage for a tutorial on downloading and running ComboFix:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

See the area: Using ComboFix, and when done, post the log back here along with the OTL fix log. Smile

So do you think it is fixed? Will it stop sending out emails to my contacts using my address?

If you see any weird activity on the other machine, post a new topic about it, so we can avoid confusion. ;)

Post by racafrustrated on 14th April 2010, 1:49 am

It's Back. There was one night without emails being sent out. Now last night it sent out emails again. I am not sure if the problem is with my desktop machine (the one we have been working on) or my laptop?? The strange thing is I can shut down both machines at night and the strange emails still go out to all of our contacts. Help!

Save these instructions so you can have access to them while in Safe Mode.

Please click [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • Accept the License agreement and click on next.
  • It will, by default, install it to your desktop folder. Click Next.
  • It will then open a box There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.
  • Hidden Startup Objects
  • System Memory
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)
Leave the rest of the settings as they appear as default.
  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand Corner.
  • It will automatically Neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it cannot be neutralized then choose the delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done click on the reports button at the bottom and save it to file name it Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report it will be at the very top under Detected post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

What email account do you have? Have you tried to change the password on that account?

We have an MSN account and we use Windows Live Mail to check our email. Our laptop is also connected to the same email account, also using Windows Live Mail. No, I have not tried to change the password.

Try to change the password, then let me know if those emails are still outgoing.
