Digital Protection Virus

Post by jlundeen on Sat Apr 10, 2010 6:50 am

I have been infected with the Digital Protection Virus. I tried logging in under safe mode as instructed. Whenever I try to hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc or Cntl-Alt-Del to get to the Task Manager, it tells me "The administrator has disabled the Task Manager". How can I end the processes digprot.exe or ave.exe if I can't even get to the Task Manager? Any advice? I'm trying to run the AntiMalwarePro but it isn't pulling up this virus.

Hello! We need to do some diagnostics to get started.

1. Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by noahdfear.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click profiles.exe and post its log when you reply

2. Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by ad13 and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click Win32kDiag.exe to run Win32kDiag and let it finish.
  • When it states "Finished! Press any key to exit...", press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
  • Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

3. Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by me, and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Cheetah-Anti-Rogue.zip, and extract the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Cheetah-Anti-Rogue.cmd to start.
  • It will finish quickly and launch a log.
  • Post the contents of it in your next reply.

4. In your next reply, please post the following logs for my review:
  • Profiles log (1)
  • Win32kDiag log (2)
  • Cheetah log (3)

Thanks! Smile

Dr. Jay (DJ)

Nah, it's fine.

Please visit this webpage for a tutorial on downloading and running ComboFix:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

See the area: Using ComboFix, and when done, post the log back here.

Re: Digital Protection Virus

Post by jlundeen on Mon Apr 12, 2010 5:48 am

Hi DragonMaster Jay-

I ran combofix and the log is below.
The computer is already faster, the little inappropriate images are gone from the desktop, and the images are gone from my toolbar. I still have 2 icons on the desktop (both saying digital protection with 2 different pictures) but am not getting the annoying popups asking me to purchase an updated version because my system is at risk.
I had delete my avira antivirus software because even though I had disabled it, it still thought it was active. Am I safe to download this again? Avira didn't protect me from this nasty virus-is there a better free anti viral program that you would recommend?
Am I safe to start using the internet again?
Do people know yet where this virus is coming from and how can I prevent myself from getting it again?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for all the questions!
Jessica

Post by Dr Jay on Mon Apr 12, 2010 2:17 pm

Not yet on Avira.

Re-running ComboFix to remove infections:

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:
    killall::

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\AVP 2009
    c:\program files\AntiMalware Pro
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\everythingytb
    c:\program files\Digital Protection
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\Smart-Shopper

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Digital Protection"=-
    "PMA_ENT"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\PRAGMAd.sys]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\PRAGMAxtyexuecbv]

    NetSvc::
    PRAGMAxtyexuecbv

    File::
    c:\windows\PRAGMAxtyexuecbv
    c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\Temp\PRAGMA3e02.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\Temp\pragmamainqt.dll
    c:\windows\TEMP\PRAGMAfebe.tmp 146 bytes
    c:\windows\system32\PRAGMAamdxjtobfk.dll
    c:\windows\system32\PRAGMAdoucrmkxsm.dat
    c:\windows\system32\PRAGMAigsbqsfmoc.dll
    c:\windows\system32\PRAGMAordgeiuhal.dll

    Rootkit::

    Reboot::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  • Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  • Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

===================================================

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.

    Code:

    :filefind
    pragma*.*
    *pragma*

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Alternate link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
(Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

(Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!)

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If you are prompted to restart, please allow it to restart your computer. Failure to do this, will cause the infection to still be active on the computer.
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Looks safe to me. Any more issues like popups, etc?

If not, then we will proceed to cleanup.

Hi DragonMaster Jay-

No more popups. There is still an icon for digital protection on the desktop though. Is that a problem?

Thanks so much for all of your help.

Will the Kapersky Online Scanner delete the program or should I just right click the icon and hit delete before running this scan?

To manually create a new Restore Point

  • Select System
  • On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
  • Go back to the System and Maintenance page
  • Select Performance Information and Tools
  • On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
  • Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
  • In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete
You are now done

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer:

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

==

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start
    button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp
    files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute
    or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

==

Download Security Check by screen317 from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Save it to your Desktop.

Hi DragonMaster Jay-
When I click on system, advanced, the only options I have are performance, user profiles, and setup and recovery. What should I choose to get to system protection?
Thanks-

Hi DragonMaster Jay-
I'm still not finding system protection. It looks like my OS may be XP. Is system restore the same as system protection?
Thanks.

Oh. I thought you had 7.
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

DragonMaster Jay-
I think the virus is gone and I am eternally grateful to you.
Any recommendations on what antivirus software I should use? I had Avira but it didn't catch this nasty virus. I've still got Malwarebytes on my desktop-is that good and does it run daily updates?
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Please download the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Before installing: it is important to remove older versions of Acrobat Reader since it does not do so automatically and old versions still leave you vulnerable.
Go to the Control Panel and enter Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista/7).
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Uninstall/Remove each of them.

Once old versions are gone, please install the newest version.

=====================

Please read the following information that I have provided, which will help you prevent malicious software in the future. Please keep in mind, malware is a continuous danger on the Internet. It is highly important to stay safe while browsing, to prevent re-infection.

Software recommendations

Antivirus/Antispyware

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]: this is Microsoft's free antivirus/antispyware program. It equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, and worms. It is also light on the computer's performance. Note: when installing this, you have both an antivirus and antispyware. Make sure you also get a firewall.
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]: this is one of the most powerful, and easiest to use security software. The free version equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, worms, and rogue software. Note: when installing this, you have both an antivirus and antispyware. Make sure you also get a firewall.

Firewall

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]: the free version is just as good as the premium. I have linked you to the free version.
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]: the free version is just as good as the premium. I have linked you to the free version. The optional security suite enhances the firewall by 40% increase. If you would like to install the suite that includes antivirus, then remove your old antivirus first.
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]: free and excellent firewall.

Note: Please keep ALL of these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems.

Resident Protection help
A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall, and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors such as SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Rogue programs help
There are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Securing your computer

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer's loopback address, meaning it will be difficult to infect your computer in the future.

Please consider using an alternate browser
Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScript, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.
