PC running very slow

Post by greich2 on Wed Feb 10, 2010 5:07 am

Hello,

I apologize if I have posted in the wrong section. Please move if necessary. For quite some time now my PC has been running very slow. For example, taking 5+ minutes to load IE. I have a pentium 4 2.8ghz running windows XP SP3. Any ideas on how to get it moving faster?

Thanks

Well first off, it could be because you need some more RAM. Check how much RAM you have. RAM is the most common upgrade to get better performance.

The CPU looks good, if you upgrade the RAM to at least 2GB and it's still slow, you might have to think about a CPU upgrade. Is your hard drive pretty packed? Maybe you need more hard drive space.

Try running Malwarebytes and Spybot (both free downloads) after you've freed up some memory. I thought slow was normal until I found out I had a bunch of infections that had slipped through Norton.

I have an HP desktop that came with *gasp* Millenium. I had it upgraded to XP Pro, added a DVD burner, doubled the memory myself to 256 (it was hard to find a compatible card). It's 900 hz and actually runs well as long as I don't ask it to do very much. Cleaning the crud out stopped the browser freezing problems after I'd removed every program I could possibly remove. It's about 8 1/2 years old and is fine for running my Magic Jack, playing ancient games and checking message boards first thing in the morning. It will not die.

A thorough cleanup sped up my portable computers too.
