Help! file wuauclt.exe is infected.

Post by koorsca on Fri 22 Jan 2010, 7:04 am

I am new here but need help. I think I got a virus for a rogue virus in an advertisement on a blog. Ugh!

Anyway, I am working in Firefox, but Explorer keeps opening up and an error message keeps popping up saying Application cannot be executed. The file wuauclt.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

I noticed I shouldn't follow the directions for others, but need to get specific instructions for my computer, so I wanted to post here for help.

Pop ups keep coming up asking me to run an antivirus, but it is NOT my antivirus. I have McAfee, which I cannot even open up and get into.

Any help is appreciated.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
