VLC Media Player 1.1.1

Post by Doctor Inferno on Sat Jun 07, 2008 6:38 am

VLC media player - the cross-platform media player and streaming server

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

I would suggest KM player, as i have used both the players, Km player has 5 times better sound as well as picture quality, High definition videos can be enjoyed a lot better in KM player. VLC player has file associations and eventually screws up registry if uninstalled not properly or throughly.

What's the problem with playing MKV files? My machine plays them fine.
I'm aware they freeze on some machines like my school machines with only 512mb of RAM, playing videos/doing other things at the same time uses up it's memory.

Problem could also be how well whoever encoded the video from XviD to MKV (Bitrate, FPS, etc)

I think it was the encoding which was the problem, but I installed CCCP and it didn't freeze up on Windows Media Player Classic so I assume VLC might be partial to it.

Currently VLC will only play individual TS/M2TS/MKV files but not Blu-ray or HD DVD discs.

hmm that's weird, I downloaded the new version of VLC and the blu ray disc works, maybe its not really blu ray? either way I'm happy because it works! Big Grin

VLC is excellent. Not as good as windows media player when it comes to skin, but when VLC comes to the option to repair files and the extensions it can play, vlc comes first.

It simply depends on what you think is preferred. I like Media Player Classic Homecinnema myself (from CCCP), but I always have returned to this media player whenever I have problems (such as font viewing) because it is a stable, trusted player that I have. I have either had the video work on one or the other player, or both (in the case of .avi).

kudos to VLC player....it is now my default for video files and for its snapshot feature. While there have been some issues with sound, on the whole it performs brilliantly!
