UPS virus

Post by Njhawkes on 15th January 2010, 2:52 pm

Hey everyone! My dad's pc was recently infected by the so called "UPS" virus. It's a real pain in the ass, and we need help! Basically he didn't think twice about the email because he was expecting packages at the time.
I've checked several forums without luck, and was hoping for a random geek out there to help us out.

I know formatting is an option, BUT my dad is a computer noob (who doesn't back up files... ever) and there are important files on the hard disk.

The problem is that nothing works. Can't log on because it automatically logs off again! Tried running it in safe mode, same problem. I also tried system restore, which didn't give any positive results.

Need help asap!
C'mon geeeeks!

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

But how can I install the program without getting into windows? When I first turn on the pc, I see the desktop background, yet after 2 - 3 seconds it just goes back to the log on screen. It's an infinite loop pretty much...

Lets try a boot disc.

Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore.

  • Download The Avira AntiVir Rescue System from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD.
  • Then please use that CD/DVD with Avira Rescue System to boot your computer.
You'll get a boot option to either boot from hard drive or AntiVir Rescue System.

Press the number 2 on your keyboard to boot into AntiVir Rescue System.

Please wait until drivers are loaded and Main menu shows. Then please select the second option “Scan your system with AntiVir” and hit Enter.

Under Configuration, please select Scan all files, Try to repair infected files and Rename files if they cannot be removed?.

Then please start the scan.

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System wil now

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,
  • scan the system for virus infections.

I didn't get that menu even after setting "Atapi" disk drive as the primary boot drive.
The computer is an old Dell 4100 dimension, and what really frustrates me is that it boots the damn floppy drive even if I disable it and set the disk drive as the prioritized device.
I get this error message:
INVALID BOOT DISKETTE
INSERT BOOT DISKETTE IN A:
(THIS IS THE FLOPPY DRIVE)

This VIRUS is really pissing me off.... Any other ideas? Thanks for your help anyway!

Hello.
Is this a laptop? if not and it's a Desktop, just take the floppy drive out.

Thanks for your help. Avira antivir didn't work, but my brother installed linux and copied the important files and then formatted the pc. I appreciate the help and instructions you gave, but the problem has now been solved!

Thanks anyways!
