suggested security

Post by tomache on 15th January 2010, 2:26 pm

Hi, I was wondering what you guys suggest as to running security. I just got a new laptop that came with Norton but was advised to remove then install Webroot Spy Sweeper (6 month free trial). i'm wondering if thats just a sales pitch, I used Avast previously but did get malware and viruses on my old computer it seemed. Just wondering what you might suggest as the most effective protection. Thank you.

And "Windows Defender needs to scan my computer" is a message I'm getting, Is this legit? I'm a little gunshy from past experiences with viruses etc.

Hello,

Webroot Spy Sweeper and Norton Antivirus are both different type of security softwares. Uninstall another other antivirus you have now and choose one:

Microsoft Security Essentials: this is Microsoft's free antivirus/antispyware program. It equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, and worms. It is also light on the computer's performance. Note: when installing this, you have both an antivirus and antispyware. Make sure you also get a firewall.
  • AVG Free: this is one of the most powerful, and easiest to use security software. The free version equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, worms, and rogue software. Note: when installing this, you have both an antivirus and antispyware. Make sure you also get a firewall.
  • Avast!: this is an advanced malware removal antivirus program. The free version equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, worms, and rogue software.
  • Avira Antivir: this is an advanced malware removal antivirus program. The free version equips you with protection against viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, worms, and rogue software.

I recommend Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Hello,

In my opinion using a Firewall is totally your choice, because Windows already has a good firewall built-in. But if you want to feel more secure, I would recommend you can get Outpost Free:

Silly question; I looked at agnitum and it mentioned compatibility for everything except windows 7, which is what I am running now, I am assuming it is okay but would like to verify. And thank you very much.
