Help please?

Post by Thatgirl_3 on 15th January 2010, 2:06 am

My mom's computer is acting funky. She runs Windows XP home edition and got the computer from her friend. At first it was working dandy but now there's some wierd virus scanner that won't let her do anything. It blocks her wireless internet, won't let her start in safe mode, won't let her access files in her control panel and pops up every ten seconds to "scan for viruses".

Any help on what kind of virus this is and how to get rid of it??

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that.

Use a USB flash drive, or burn it to a CD. Then transfer it.

Please download the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked ... leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Did this happen after you rebooted your computer during ComboFix?

Oh, the repair disc. When you place it in the drive, can you boot to setup?

If so, there should be an option called R (Repair). We will need to use that option.

Let me know what you find.

It was the supplemental recovery disc and booted up when the computer was restarted but after I went through the whole process it still doesn't do anything. It keeps going to a black screen.
