Problems

Post by Pleasehelpme on 7th January 2010, 5:28 pm

I have Malware Defender and Antivirus Live that I know of. One wrong click on a pop up and it all goes downhill. I have downloaded Malwarebytes' and when I try to run it in safe mode it doesn't open up. I have tried uninstalling and re-downloading it a few times from this site and the malwarebytes' website and still had the same issue. I wasn't able to download through rapidshare if it makes a difference. Please help!!!

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

When I double click the icon on my desktop I instantly get a message saying Malwarebytes' has either stopped working or is not responding, I beleive it was stopped working. It only does it every so often though, hence the confusion. The other times nothing happens.

Re: Problems

Post by Pleasehelpme on 8th January 2010, 3:17 am

I was on the computer testing things out because it appeared like things were better. After about 15 minutes or so (very rough estimate) I got a few messages saying that things had stopped working. It started out with Internet Explorer, I didn't have any internet explorers open I was using Mozilla but may have been residual from when I logged onto my AIM account, then Adobe stopped followed by Microsoft Word, which I know for a fact wasn't running. After a few minutes I lost all my icons and taskbar, although the windows I had open stayed. I did a computer restart using Ctrl+Alt+Delete and logged back in to find that my icons/bar had not been restored. I shut the computer down after that.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Will I be able to run this on a different account than I have been using? My main account,as stated above, has lost its task bar and icons. Also, do I need to click on both of the links above or is it just the same download from two different sources?

No, try this.
Logon to your account, and open the Task Manager via ctrl/alt/del, then go into the Applications tab. Hit the New Task button, and type in explorer in the box that opens.

Do you icons load now? just click one link, then download and try running it.

Lets try using Safe Mode.

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

Do your icons/taskbar load in Safe Mode? if not, try using the Task Manager in Safe Mode too.

I tried Safemode and this is what I got (typing from good computer):

Pop up box titled "Spyware Alert!"

In the box is the following:

Security Warning!

Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine.
this virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and Active-x objects.
The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers e-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself.
In worst cases this worm can allow attachers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data,
Viruses can danage your confidential data and work on your computer.
Continue working in unprotected mode is very dangerous.

Type: Virus
System Affected: Windows 2000, NT, ME, XP, Vista, 7
Security Risk (0-5): 5
Recomendations: It is necessary to preform a full system scan.

Actually nevermind SDFix, try this instead.

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.
