#2 Computer Infected and Running Slow

Down loaded the Malware program that was recommended to fix myr computer on to my wife's computer that she uses for school. Found a couple of items and removed them. However the computer is still running slow. Any advise on how to get it running up to speed

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.


Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE


  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.

The only part that I'm not sure about is the part about Fire fox. As I can't find the select all button?

ATF-Cleaner cleans out temp files, and if you don't clean them regularly, they build up and slow your machine down, so were just taking some un-needed wait off your machine.

Reboot the machine normally.
Is the machine any faster now?

Ok, ran firefox ATF and the machine is running fine now.

Also, with regards to fire fox, you previously stated to add three add-ons, one was for the scrips blocker. The only problem we've had with this is that it blocked my wife from playing some of the games from Face book on my laptop. Is there any way to still use this add-on and still access face book games?

Yes. NoScript adds a little "S" down in the bottom right corner of the right, left click it once and it shows a list of sites blocked. One will likely be facebook.com, if the games are still blocked, keep unblocking things one by one till you hit the right one. Smile NoScript will keep you safe from malicious scripts that try to load.

Just tried to dwn load adware and the rest of the software that you previously recommended for my other computer. But for whatever reason I can not lad Ad-ware, it just won't install.
