Login requied for localhost

Post by Lance(HAOH) on 3rd January 2010, 3:57 am

Hi. I am on an XP service pack 3 machine. I do not have any server software installed on my computer. I am unable to access localhost. When I type http://localhost into the url bar of any browser. I get a pop-up requiring a login. Here is the screenshot:

However, when I tried the same address on my vista machine, I could access it.
I could not even get any response from that address initially. I looked into my hosts file and I replaced it with the default one using a program called HostsXpert. But after that, I have been getting this error.
Here are the cotents of my hosts file:

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.
# For example:
# rhino.acme.com # source server
# x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost

Could someone please help me to resolve this problem?
