Another Victim of Win32/Nuqel.E

Post by sbandd2 on Sat Jan 02, 2010 4:41 pm

Belahzur,

From all the web searches that I've done in the last few days, 2010 came in with a bang and has infected many of us with the Win32/Nuqel.E virus. Since the first time it showed up, the virus seems to have morphed as the previous fixes referenced at the different sites don't work.

In stating, such I now come to your site seeking your help in resolving this problem as my laptop, has also acquired the virus.

My operating system is windows XP Pro

VR,

Don

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

I would, if I could access the net via the laptop, however the virus won't allow it. What I have done is saved a copy to a disk, only problem is that the bug won't allow me to up load it. Any suggestions?

Re: Final Steps - Another Victim of Win32/Nuqel.E

Post by sbandd2 on Sat Jan 02, 2010 10:17 pm

Lets back up a couple of postings, first I've been unable to down laod anything to my infected computer, let alone get to the web. What I was trying to state is that via another computer I was able to create a disk with the HiJack file on it.

Since then I've tried the following ways to load it to the infected machine.

Insert disk, go to start, instal, run ect...
insert disk, Turn machine off and then back on hoping that it will, by pass the virus - no luck

Any other suggestions

Hello.

  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [ZR02Kfa4ES] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\yjcxcjgt\czuvipwh.exe

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello.

You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Mcafee installed, along with CA. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Symantec to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    CA Pest Patrol Realtime Protection
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
    Viewpoint Media Player

Next, please post a new Hijack This.

Understand running two anti virus programs not a good idea- have tried to remove CA - however it is buried in a Yahoo file. Tried to delete CA and can't per ArcLib.dll and also the old browser per ybrwicon.exe as both of these block the way to delete both of the Yahoo files.

Re: Final Steps - Another Victim of Win32/Nuqel.E

Post by Belahzur on Sun Jan 03, 2010 9:28 pm

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe (file missing)

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

How is the machine running now?

It seems to be Ok, I'll put it though a few more paces and see how it's running. As for the dual Virus scans, how do I remove the Ca file completely or can I just disable it. Eitherway, if it's not needed, why keep it on the machine.

VR,

Don

Yeah, that service is the AV, just not sure why it's not letting you uninstall CA.
Hmm, can you disable the Yahoo AV?

Sure, if I can do it through Hi Jack, I'm pretty sure it will go away. If not that way, I'd say it's buried too deep for my skill set, unless you want to walk me though it. Also, a side note, when I run internet, especially on the Geek site, the computer stalls and locks up when I scroll down the page.

Let me know if it comes back or not.

This one was removed
O23 - Service: CAISafe - Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe

Was go to delete this too, however when I read the info on it I changed my mind.
O23 - Service: VET Message Service (VETMSGNT) - Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe

Lastly, when I tried to reboot, Rundll.exe was having a problem shutting down.

Shall I make a new restore point? Any other suggestions or practices that I should follow to prevent this from happening again?

Also, I have two other computers in the house, since this issue, I've down loaded both Hi-Jack and MBAM to both of them. Did the same searches for viruses and found problems with both. As a precautionary move, I removed the multi anti-virus programs and reloaded MC-Gaf on to them. However, my wife's computer has improved some, but its still running slow, better than what it was, but not up to standards. Should I continue working with you on this matter or should I work with one of the other techs?

VR,

Don

Hello.
Since this machine we've worked on is clean, lets lock down down and keep it clean.

We can work on the other machine next, but please open a new topic for that machine. Smile Best to avoid confusion.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Its working, down loaded most of the other files/programs except for spy-bot as McGaf has a conflict with it.

Ran the necessary scans and removed some more adware, seems to be good for now. Now that I'm using foxfire as my browser, how do I transfer my bookmarks from internet explorer? Is there anything else that needs to be done before creating a new restore point?
