Antivirus Live - Nothin Works So Far

Post by ringer59 on 15th December 2009, 7:56 am

I have just been infected with Antivirus Live and nothing so far works that I have located here so far. Running Windows Home XP sp2. So nothing can be executed that I have downloaded such as HijackThis and Malwarebytes. I get the same msg "file is infected . . when trying to open any type of antivirus/malware programs. Naturally my AVG does not work. Cannot open taskmangager, msconfig, Add/Remove (Rundll.exe infected). I have not restarted my PC. Continue to keep getting messages re: xxxx port infected, do you want to fix this and "Windows Security Alerts, which just takes me to Antivirus Live. The only thing that is not locked up so far is my Firefox browser - new tabs for IE keep opening and when I try to close them, I get the hour glass. So far I can still get to my gmail and yahoo mail. Naturally this happens while I am looking for work, and that really limits my budget, but would happily donate 10 bucks for solution. To say this is really urgent would be an understatement. Is there anything I can run online? I'll leave it to you guys. You can probably tell I am a new member and apologize for any mistakes in protocol, but I do need HELP! thanks, ringer59

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to resolve the problem suggested by runnerlake via turning off pc (no matter what I downloaded, including MBAM could not execute) and back on. I was able to invoke task manager but no processes showed up with anything like sysguard in them, however msconfig did show 3 occurrences of xxxsysguard which I disabled, giving me time to download latest Ad-ware, Spybot and upgrade my free AVG 8.5 to 9.0. Everyone of them picked up viruses, malware etc. So far, I have not had anymore problems- at least I was able to turnoff/on PC manually and have it come up. Unfortunately, my Regcure just expired last week and at this time cannot afford a renewal, I could not locate any freeware/shareware of registry cleaners/fixes, but as of now I have not encountered any more problems and my AVG and Ad-ware are constantly in background with AVG scheduled to run nightly.
Thanks again for your reply and suggestions. Do you know of any decent free or low donation registry cleaners?

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications and their potential for harming your OS far outweighs any small potential for improving your computer's performance.

There are a number of them available and some are more safe than others. Keep in mind that no two registry cleaners work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad" entry. One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause a problem when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work. Without research into what the registry entry selected for deletion is, a registry cleaner can end up being an automated method to cause problems with the registry.

For routine use by those not familiar with the registry, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.
