Bankerfox.A

Post by Maegrim on 3rd December 2009, 8:31 am

My girlfriend’s laptop appears to be infected with the Bankerfox.A & Win32/Nuqel.E /Antivirus System Pro bug.

She uses Windows XP and already was using Symantec Antivirus (will not run) and Ad-Aware (which I can get to open but will not run). She is required to keep her computer up to date for school (online content) so to my knowledge everything is up to date.

I get 3 windows that pop up. The pop up in the lower right hand corner is labeled “Antivirus System Pro Alert” and then tells me I have one of the 2 virus’s listed above. I then get a security warning box in the middle of the screen that tells me various files, such as dllhost.exe or notepad.exe are infected. The third box is a bit bigger and is labeled “Spyware Alert” with text telling me I have 34 threats on my computer.
Clicking on the highlighted boxes takes me to a website, but I have disabled the internet connection.

I noticed that on the forum the first thing you ask people to do when they have this bug is to run Hijack this usually followed by Malewarebytes. I at first could not get either to even install. After a number of attempts I managed to get both installed. I then could not get either to run. As soon as the program would pop up it would be cancelled out and replaced by a Security Warning box like the one I listed above. I finally realized I could get both programs to start up if I clicked on the icon immediately after it appeared on the desktop following a reboot.

Malewarebytes will not open; I get “Runtime error’0’” or “Runtime Error’440’” when I try. Hijack this will run but I can’t open the logfile to post the results of the scan either. I’m sure that will be the first thing you’ll ask for.

Lastly, will re-enabling the internet prohibit curing the virus in anyway, or should I just leave it disabled? I had to use a flash drive to load Hijack-This and Malewarebytes onto the laptop; is there any danger of infecting another PC if I plug the same flashdrive into it to load more antivirus programs?

Please download exeHelper from one of the two links.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hello.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

We can remove OTMoveIt now.

  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it again.
  • Press the green CleanUp! button.
  • Press Yes cleanup process prompt, do the same for the reboot prompt.
How is the machine running now?

It seems to be doing fine now. I'm giving it back to my girlfriend today and have told her to report anything abnormal or the return of the virus. If so I'll be back on here shortly

Thanks for the help
