Solved Very Slow Downloading Online

Post by MyOwnIllusion on 25th November 2009, 11:31 pm

Websites, videos, files are all downloading very slowly. Often I get these two error messages "Firefox can't find the server at feedproxy..." and "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [any website]".

System: Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop, Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 @ 2.66Ghz, 4GB DDR3, Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit (upgraded from Vista)
Web Browser: Firefox 3.5

Here is everything I have tried and my HiJackThis readout:
-Updated Windows, Firefox, all my drivers, Flash, Java, AV, AS
-Flushed my DNS through cmd.exe
-Deleted all history, temp files, form data, etc... (through Control Panel and in Firefox)
-Changed to recommended settings in about:config
-Increased by cache size from 50MB to 250MB
-Disabled ALL my plugins and ran Firefox barebones
-Tried Safari, IE8, Chrome
-Removed all unnecessary items in StartUp
-Shut down all unnecessary running processes (as found in HiJackThis and Task Manager)
-Updated my AV (Kaspersky)
-Updated my AntiSpam (CounterSpy)
-Shut down BOTH my AV & AntiSpam progs
-Made sure nothing is running an update
-Watched my CPU, RAM and Network Activity (to make sure there isn't something running in the background that I've missed)
-Probably a few others things I've forgotten my now...

Of all the things I've already mentioned I've done, the only things that has worked at all is when I reboot and dump the temp files. Then I can watch couple vids. After that everything slows down or stops again. The reboot/dump thing doesn't work AT ALL when I get the two error messages mentioned above when browsing. All of this seemed to start when I upgraded (through Dell) from Vista to Win7HP. However, I have been unable to find any mention of any browsing problems concerning Win7 from new or upgrading. I May have forgotten a couple things I've done. Been working on this for about two weeks. One last thing...my wife's laptop (less capable, Vista) has suffered no problems and is still lightning fast running on the same wireless, secured, home network. So there doesn't seem to be an ISP or network problem.

Hello,

Are you connecting to the Internet via a proxy? Go to Advanced >> Network tab >> Setting >> make sure No proxy is selected.

Thank you for responding. Just got back into town...
I had this setting on "auto-detect proxy settings for this network". I changed the setting as suggested. After about an hour of browsing around as much as I could to test the change (I rebooted, fyi) there doesn't seem to be any improvement. Very slow browsing and downloading. Any other ideas? I'm open to anything.

Hey Doctor Inferno, I found a fix to my problem that I believe would also really help many others. You are the only one with the means and authority to bring it to them. So I will tell you and you can tell them if you see fit.
My problem had something to do with Winsock as it turns out and you can see by my previous posts...I had tried everything to no avail. I found a freeware program that totally fixed my problem and also sped things up in other areas. The ware is called "Rizone’s Power Tools 0.0.2.2988 (Prototype 5)". Here is the site: http://www.rizonetech.com/?page_id=514. This page explains what it does much better than I ever could. Oh...I was looking for "Winsock Repair". A program by Rizone that he/she or they no longer offer, but you can find it out there. This Power Tools ware offers the same Winsock repair functions in the "repair" tab and is written for XP and Windows 7, where Winsock Repair is only for XP. I love what you guys are doing here and really hope this info can help other on your forums.
I'll be around...

Solved Re: Very Slow Downloading Online

Post by MyOwnIllusion on 5th December 2009, 11:07 pm

GRRRRRRRR!!!!!
Problem is back... The winsock, TCP/IP issue seems (seemed) to be the problem. In fact, I can reset the TCP stack, renew TCP/IP connections, and reset the winsock catalog, then restart and I will be able to stream a video for a few minutes. Then the stream just stops. I can reset everything/restart, but if I was watching a Divx vid I have to load the thing from the beginning. With a flash vid I an jump to wherever I was, but the rez with flash isn't a good.

I also switched my DNS service from automatic/my ISP to GoogleDNS (they're going after OpenDNS and I believe all ISPs) and that seems to have quickened browsing in general, but it hasn't solved my downloading or streaming issues.

Five minutes ago I ran a download/latency test at SpeedTest.net and am showing 64Mps down/1Mps up. I'm only paying for 10Mps with my service, but they offer 20M and 30M if you pay for it. Usually I'm around 10-15Mps down and 1-3Mps up. So...I don't always have networking issues obviously.
Again, my issues are videos not streaming (buffering forever), videos stopping mid-stream and never restarting. Also, I often get an error when browsing "Firefox can't find the server at...[website]". If I click off and on that particular link it will eventually pop in happy as can be.

As you can see from my posts above I have tried virtually every fix and voodoo remedy on the net. Thought it was fixed. I was wrong. Anyone out there have any ideas? And thanks Dr. Inferno for entertaining my continuing malaise.

Hello,

Not sure if this will work, but you can give it a try:

Install this to reset your TCP/IP:

Dr. Inferno, I tried MS FixIt to no avail. Actually on the MS website there is a note saying that FixIt won't work with Windows 7, which I have. They suggested using the onboard troubleshooting ware. Already have, but I tried again and got the same negative results. I am currently trying another angle, but won't explain until I know the result. I'll be back...

Solved Re: Very Slow Downloading Online

Post by MyOwnIllusion on 28th December 2009, 4:11 am

SOLVED!!!!
Okay...if you've read my looong post above you know that I have tried f'n everything to fix this nagging problem that so many are suffering. I'll give a nutshell of the problem: Slow loading webpages, webpages won't load at all, error messages (...can't find the server at..., server timed out, server not found, DNS error, and a few others). The error messages depend on the browser I was using at the time. The problem occurred in every browser...and YES it happened in Chrome as well. When streaming video from anywhere the video will either stall in a constant buffering cycle or just not load at all. These problems were very intermittent. I couldn't find any kind of pattern at all...totally unpredictable.

The final problem turned out to be an incompatibility between my wireless network adapter (Intel 5300 AGN) and the security settings on my router (Belkin "N"). I found the solution on the Dell forum. Here is the post:

Re: Latitude E6400, Intel Wifi Link 5300 AGN Drops Connections
21 Jan 2009 08:45PM

I finally got my E6400 working on my home wireless. I have a Linksys WRT300N router and I found that I could connect without a problem when I disabled encryption, but when I re-enabled encryption I would either connect at 1Mbps or not at all. To resolve this problem I downloaded the latest driver from Intels site, uninstalled the Intel utility and let Windows manage my wireless connections. I than reset my router back to factory defualts as I had changed quite a few settings and I did not know which one(s) were casuing the problem. I than made one change at a time to see what caused my loss of connection. I found that my encryption was set to high, as I had it set to WPA2. Windos XP SP2 and above supports WPA2, but the wireless drive must also support it for it to support the passing of WPA2 capabilities to Windows Wireless Auto Configuration. This wireless card must not support if so I set my encryption level to WPA and I could connect just fine. I than changed my radio band to Wide - 40MHz and my connection speed dropped to 1Mbps. This card should work with wide as that is for N networks and this card is an N card, so I set the band back to Auto and my connection speed ramped back up to 54Mbps. I also changed the encryption algorithm from AES to TKIP. You will also need to change three settings in the wireless cards driver as well - From the Advanced tab of the wireless card driver, make the following changes: Power Management - Highest, Roaming Aggressiveness - Lowest, Power Saver Mode - Off. Also on the power management tab, disable power management.

The only different thing I did was remove my router's firewall and security coding. I unplugged the router then turned the firewall back on and set the encoding back to the maximum setting (WPA/WPA2-PSK). This meant I had to reintroduce my laptop to the router. I honestly don't know if it was one thing here that did it or a combination of things. I just mirrored what the post said to do.

I'm on my third day now and have been testing the hell out of this. There hasn't been a single hiccup in webpage loading or video streaming. I've actually downloaded the first five seasons (and counting) of SG1. Huge fan. And a couple of movies. Very fast downloads the way life is meant to be. Speedtest.net has my download speed around 50Mbps now.

I really hope this helps someone. I know for the past two months I've spent the bulk of my free time on this problem. At least the weather has been crappy. I'll check back here every couple of days. If anyone has any question feel free to ask. Good Luck
