Problem with McAfee. Error starting on demand scanner.

Post by Aussie_Ash_131 on Thu Nov 12, 2009 6:48 am

Hi.
The other day i decided to run a scan while i was doing something else. I opened up McAfee security center, and went to the scan window and selected all possible drives.
After it began initialising the scan an error message came up, saying "Error: Starting on Demand Scanner".

So i went onto the McAfee tech support, and was given some instructions that didnt solve the problem. They told me to do a disk check and repair bad sectors, which after doing successfully didnt fix anything.

After uninstalling McAfee and using the mcpr.exe file, and reinstalling, no luck. And now McAfee is working intermintantly. Sometimes it says im not protected and cannot fix itself. Sometimes i am protected.

I think this is a virus but of course with the obvious problem, i cant find and get rid of it.

Any help, would be much appreciated. Also step by step instructions would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help, Ash.

Oh and also if any more information is needed, im happy to provide it.

After updating everything on that list and downloading hijack this.

I run hijack this and click on scan and log file and it brings up the scan page (in the background of picture 2 in the forum) and it doesnt open a log file and there is also no log file in the path of where i saved hijack this (winlogon).

I am also unable to operate hijack this a second time, and unable to delete or edit it in any way because it says i do not have the appropriate permissions.

Whats the next step?

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

When my computer was starting up though, it came up with a notice that said "Windows cannot find cleanup.exe. To find files go to start and search". I am also now unable to connect to the internet on my computer!

I use a wireless adaptor on a desktop computer to connect and the wireless usb adaptor works fine, but i cant connect. When i go to the internet preferences, i set up the wireless network preferences and click ok, and then it doesnt connect, so i go have another look at the preferences and they aren't there anymore.

what do i do now?

We'll try and resolve that now, I need 1 more log before hand though, it will show me more info and a few more things as to what's going on.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Re: Problem with McAfee. Error starting on demand scanner.

Post by Belahzur on Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:18 pm

Okay, good. The Hijack This log looks okay, but not done yet, this infection can be messy and sometimes like to leave its mark, so we need to shift that too.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste BOTH LOGS back here, use more than one post if needed.

Log looks okay, still getting the on-demand scanner error?

thanks for all your help so far! i really appreciate it!

well im actually unable to open mcafee, whatever i click on it just has the loading mouse thing and then doesnt open.

im also still unable to connect to the internet.

and sometimes i get an error report from micrsoft and it encounters an error with explorer.exe (usually when im trying to fix the internet settings) and then it pops up with another one for "Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger".

Im getting worried about my computer haha.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

  • Please download Junction.zip and save it.
  • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:

    cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  • A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

Re: Problem with McAfee. Error starting on demand scanner.

Hello.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

Like you did with juntion.exe, place inherit.exe into the Windows folder.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

@echo off
"inherit.exe" "c:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan\mcods.exe"
"inherit.exe" "c:\WINDOWS\system32\MRT.exe"
exit
Save this as fix.bat, save it to your desktop.

Let it run until it says OK on each one.

well i was unable to open mcafee still, so i reinstalled it, and it all works fine now. im running a scan now, just to be sure!

but i still cant connect to the internet, when i put in the internet preferences and click ok it tries to connect and then if it fails, the settings disappear again.

everything else seems to be working ok though...

so yeah i dont know whats happening or what to do.

oh and also a very intersting event happened today...

i put in the internet settings just in hope and it actually connected to the internet but the little icon in the system tray said it wasnt connected. but i was able to surf the internet and everything fine.

i found this out when putting in my registration info for mcafee, cos you need to subscribe online and it popped up saying internet connection found (half way through the scan).

i dont know if that changes anything, but just thought i should let you know.

I would suggest opening a topic in the internet/networking section of this forum.
