Error Starting On Demand Scanner

Post by justinob on Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:30 pm

I am running on XP and my computer suddenly became slow so I thought maybe I had a virus so i went to my McAfee and tried to scan but it says there is an error. I don't know what the problem is and I don't know how to check.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

  • Please download Junction.zip and save it.
  • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:

    cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  • A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

Like you did with juntion.exe, place inherit.exe into the Windows folder.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

@echo off
"inherit.exe" "c:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan\mcods.exe"
"inherit.exe" "c:\\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe"
exit
Save this as fix.bat, save it to your desktop.

Let it run until it says OK, then Mcafee will work.

Yeah, it's a pretty nasty trojan, locks up files like you had there, only way around that is to totally uninstall the program, or fix it using the programs we use.

I uninstalled hijackthis but its still on my desktop and whenever I try to delete it, it says that
"Cannot delete HijackThis:Access is denied

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"

and when I double click it

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
