Virus/malware problem

Post by veronicaford on 23rd October 2009, 5:54 pm

Ok it looks like I've got a serious Virus/malware problem.

Basically, clicked on something I shouldn't have on the internet (I know - foolish!?!?) and ended up inadvertently downloading something rather evil. This happened yesterday - 23/10/2009 and have become increasingly worried when everything I do seems to completely fail at removing the problem.

I use Sophos as that's the anti-virus software my University requires me to use, and it seems to be kinda working but not completely. Every 5 minutes or so I get a pop-up from Sophos telling me the Virus has been detected and is called: Mal/FakeAvJs-A. Sometimes, despite the fact I use mozilla firefox as my main internet browser (and this happens regardless of whether I am browsing the internet at the time) I get an IE pop up either attempting to make me download what I presume is fake anti-virus software or advertising girls and their webcams etc. Sometimes, there is a message from Sophos saying that it has prevented the window from opening.

This is the log entry for the problem:

20091023 163848 Virus/spyware 'Mal/FakeAvJs-A' has been detected in "http://bestantimalware08.com/scan1/?pid=312s1&engine=%3DHQ5yTT5NjY3LjUzLjcyJnRpbWU9MTI1LjMyNE0MaA%3DN".

That's basically it. Here's the hijackthis log:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. This will not install in Vista. Just continue scanning, and skip the console install.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
