antivirus system pro

Post by asxyouxwish on 21st October 2009, 10:02 pm

Came home this afternoon to several pop ups and a strange program that I didn't recognize asking me to run a scan. I of course didn't, but now can't access My Computer, run the task manager, or even download the Java Update listed in the first step to running Hijack This.

I'm using Firefox on an ancient Dell desktop running Windows XP.

Please send help!

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I would also like to see a list of installed programs, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

In your next reply, please include the ComboFix log and the Add-Remove Programs log.

When I try to run combofix, I get various messages along the lines of

"application cannot be executed. The file pev.exe (this filename has differed) is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

and nothing loads.

When I attempt to access that page from Internet Explorer, I am redirected to this website - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and can't seem to get past it.

I don't know if there is any way to tell based on the total lack of information I've been able to provide, but truth be told I was a couple weeks away from replacing this computer altogether anyway. My only concern is that my external hard drive might somehow also be affected If there is a safe easy way to determine that, I'm totally ok with going office space on my machine and simply buying a new one.

Thanks for all your efforts thus far. Sorry I haven't been much help.

If you suspect the hard drive is infected, then you must use a rescue disk, with the type of infection that you have. It is a dangerous infection called Virut: Read more: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

We have hit a dead end. It is recommended to do a reformat and reinstall of your computer.

==

For the external hard drive, do the following:

Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cleaning systems cannot be booted anymore or disinfecting external drives that are infected by malware.
  • Download The Avira AntiVir Rescue System from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD.
  • Then please use that CD/DVD with Avira Rescue System to boot your computer.
You'll get a boot option to either boot from hard drive or AntiVir Rescue System.

Press the number 2 on your keyboard to boot into AntiVir Rescue System.

Please wait until drivers are loaded and Main menu shows. Then please select the second option “Scan your system with AntiVir” and hit Enter.

Under Configuration, please select Scan all files, Try to repair infected files and Rename files if they cannot be removed?.

Then please start the scan.

The Avira AntiVir Rescue System wil now

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,
  • scan the system for virus infections.

==

I am sorry for the bad news. I do not understand why these mean people make such harsh viruses, and I wish there was a way to clean your system without everything being damaged. But, the problem is, cleaning the system, most files will be damaged. It is like trying to clean up a city that just had a tornado or hurricane run through it. Takes rebuilding, and time to set back up.

Been away for a bit, thanks so much for your efforts. Luckily I will soon be replacing this computer and was planning on that anyway.

In terms of the external hard drive, is it safe to perform the avira rescue on a different computer or should I run it on the one experiencing problems?

Sorry for delay. On the one experiencing problems. It will not hurt running it on others, though.
