Re: axel dav

Post by Dr Jay on Sat Oct 24, 2009 12:53 am

Ok. Just got done viewing a co-expert's work on axel dav. It is not a virus.

HP/Compaq have specific system recovery options, and they use those files to "pack up" certain information. They are not bad, and can be safely deleted.

Here is just I few that I saw in your log:

c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AXEL.DAV
c:\documents and settings\Compaq_Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AXEL.DAV
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AXEL.DAV
c:\program files\AXEL.DAV

==

Just in case, please do the following:

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and save it to your Desktop.
[color:5d2c="red"]Please close all other applications running on your system.

Please double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it.

Click the Settings button.

Set it to Maximum

IMPORTANT! Then please click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and uncheck Scan Ports.

Click Create Report to run it.

It will create a zip folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop. Please upload the folder to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and click the Submit button.

Please copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report (not the log) in your next reply.

It is on this site: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

There is a browse button in the middle of the page, click that button, and find the log. Then, click Submit and it will take it from there. I just need the URL from the report, which you will find in the address bar.

Please download DDS by sUBs from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and save it to your Desktop.

Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed. There shouldn't be any scheduled antivirus scans running while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click Yes to the Optional_Scan
  • Please follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your Desktop.

I was not given a choice for a "optional scan" ? The scan ran quickly and printed out the results and never gave any more instructions or options ?

do you want "attach.txt" as a zip file because you are expecting a large file ? It isn't as big as the HJT Report ?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I noticed that it only found one spyware infection. I find it hard to believe that all the problems in this computer are the result of one tame spyware infection ? From what I have found on Google, Malware programs don't recognize "axel.dav" as a virus or a threat ?

can you please read this forum about the axel.dav virus and advise ? It mentions the fact that it undectable by anti virus software. I saw axel.dav listed in the scans that I sent you but the software did not catch it as a virus ? This forum says it dates back as far as 2001. It was created by some jerk by the name of Axel Davis in England. It is also known as VBS_REDLOF.A !

FANTASTIC !! AXEL.DAV AS LEFT THE COMPUTER !!! No longer in Program Files or in the Add / Remove Programs list. I did notice the icon still shows on the programs where it was installed, which was 90% of the programs.
Is this just the icon remaining and the program is actually removed ?

I will make a donation for the help ! I'm an old retired firefighter, I can't afford much but every little bit helps I'm sure !

I guess the Killbox worked. Smile Yeah, the program should be gone, it was only 1 file I think.

Post by redapache on Tue Oct 27, 2009 1:26 am

I went thru and deleted the icon from all the programs, I didn't want anything to do with axel.dav left in my computer !!

This site is great, my computer has been down for months, I had given up, I had tried many forums and sites and no one could or would help me !! As far as the computer shops I could buy a new for less than they wanted to fix it !!

Thank you so much and I made a donation

Re: axel dav

Post by redapache on Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:56 pm

Oh OH !! I'm getting a little concerned, I have removed the Axel.dav icon from the desktop 3 times now ? It keeps coming back ? does that mean it is still lurking around hȋdden in my computer ? something has to be putting it back ? other programs I remove don't pop back up again and again ??

Maybe it isn't a big deal, I don't know " but since this problem is still fresh with you I thought I would ask ?

Thanks

It hasn't come back since this last time that I removed it, it has been more than 12 hours.

Should I still run combo fix or wait and see what happens ?

Okay, maybe not.
I thought it was coming back in an infinite loop kinda thing. If it hasn't come back, lets not fix it.
