Virus preventing me from opening Spybot SnD, HJT/etc EDIT: I think it's Poprock

Post by Bowlingball on Mon Oct 19, 2009 5:26 pm

Hello, first timer here looking for some help please.

I got hit with something last night, did what I probably shouldn't have done and tried to remove it myself. After reading these forums I realized I don't know enough to do that sort of thing and maybe I made it worse.

At any rate, I had a few .exe files in task manager that I have removed after running Malwarebytes and Combofix, and I was able to re-download HJT and get an updated logfile. However, I still cannot open Spybot SnD, as the .exe file has permissions set such that I can't modify it, delete it, rename it, etc. I tried safe mode and I tried going into DOS to remove the read-only flag that way...

In the process of attempting to remove this, the rear mouse port is no longer being recognized. Probably something I did....

EDIT (again) Found registry values for poprock that I removed.

At any rate, your help is appreciated:

EDIT: I also have a saved logfile of Malwarebytes after it removed what it found.
HJT Log:

Post by Dr Jay on Tue Oct 20, 2009 1:26 am

Welcome to GeekPolice. We are here to save you money. Our expertise here can help you get rid of threats.

From this point on, please do not make any more changes to your computer; such as install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc. - unless advised by a Tech Staff member, administrator, or moderator. Please do not ask for help elsewhere (in this site or other sites). Doing so can result in system changes, which may not show up in the logs you post.

As this topic is for you only, I just need to issue a warning to outside readers:
Roger that Warning: Instructions issued in this topic are for this user only. We are not responsible for damages, so if you need help; please register for this site, and start a new topic requesting help.

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I would also like to see a list of installed programs, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

In your next reply, please include the ComboFix log and the Add-Remove Programs log.

Dr. Jay (DJ)

Post by Dr Jay on Tue Oct 20, 2009 2:37 pm

Please download CKScanner by askey127 from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Save it to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify that the file is saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

NEXT

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    FCopy::
    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll | C:\WINDOWS\System32\eventlog.dll
  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  5. Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  7. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

==

Please post the ComboFix and CKScanner logs in your next reply.

Dr. Jay (DJ)

Please do a scan with Spybot S&D. If you can copy and paste the results here in your next reply, please do. If you are not able to run the program, then please do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Re: Virus preventing me from opening Spybot SnD, HJT/etc EDIT: I

Post by Bowlingball on Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:47 pm

I cannot open SpyBot SnD, the error message says that I may not have permission to access the file. I will run Malwarebytes per your recommendation and post the logs.

Just to note, I have also tried to delete Spybot SnD and re-download it, but it will not work. The original SpyBot SnD.exe file I have is flagged as read-only and I cannot use it or remove it/etc.

I'll post the Malware log shortly.

Thanks again!

Please do a scan with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

I'm attempting to do this now, but after Kaspersky goes through program download and update, the next step appears to be:

Database Update (0%)

And the DB update is frozen at 0% and not moving. I have shut off my anti-viral software as well as my firewall, so I'm not sure if this is an issue with their site at the moment, or not.

I'll let it run for quite a while in case this is just a long process, but it appears stuck.

Hello again DragonMaster Jay,

Unforutunately, I cannot get Kaspersky to complete the second phase of it's updating process. I left it running for a sufficient amount of time (several hours) and the scan never begins because the update process hangs up and Firefox times out.

Do you have any other steps or suggestions?

Thank you again.

I proceeded with every step listed above. When ESET completed it's analysis, it did not appear to write a .txt file to the folder you listed above. I show two file types in that folder:

OnlineScanner.onx
OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe

Perhaps I did something incorrectly. I will do another scan to be sure.

The results of the scan were approximately 69k files searched with zero infected items found and thus nothing removed or fȋxed.

Let's do a final check, hopefully:

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and save it to your Desktop.
[color:05d5="red"]Please close all other applications running on your system.

Please double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it.

Click the Settings button.

Set it to Maximum

IMPORTANT! Then please click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and uncheck Scan Ports.

Click Create Report to run it.

It will create a zip folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop. Please upload the folder to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and click the Submit button.

Please copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report (not the log) in your next reply.

Re: Virus preventing me from opening Spybot SnD, HJT/etc EDIT: I

Post by Dr Jay on Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:50 pm

Please read the following information that I have provided, which will help you prevent malicious software in the future. Please keep in mind, malware is a continuous danger on the Internet. It is highly important to stay safe while browsing, to prevent re-infection.

Software recommendations

AntiSpyware

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
SpywareBlaster is a program that prevents spyware from installing on your computer. A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Spybot - Search & Destroy is a spyware and adware removal program. It also has realtime protection, TeaTimer to help safeguard your computer against spyware. (The link for Spybot - Search & Destroy contains a tutorial that will help you download, install, and begin using Spybot).

NOTE: Please keep ALL of these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems.

Resident Protection help
A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall, and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors such as SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Rogue programs help
There are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Securing your computer

  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer's loopback address, meaning it will be difficult to infect your computer in the future.

Please consider using an alternate browser
Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScript, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.

Re: Virus preventing me from opening Spybot SnD, HJT/etc EDIT: I

Post by Bowlingball on Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:55 pm

Thanks, and yes I do have a few more questions.

1) Can you tell me how I can regain control of my Spybot SnD? I can not modify, delete, run, or re-download the program. It says that I do not have permission. The original virus that I got is apparently gone, but I still do not have permissions to use Spybot SnD.

2) My mouse issue appears to be the port itself, but I'm not educated enough to know whether or not it's a software issue that changed when getting hit with this virus. It could have coincidentally failed on me at the same time this virus hit. Do you know how I can diagnose this, or at least determine if there is a software or registry issue pertaining to my mouse port? The mouse works when I use a USB port. I get no response when using my rear port and this started the same night I got this virus.

Thank you so much for your help!

I recommend to reinstall Spybot. I provided the install link above, so you can find the site. Smile

Find this entry in Device Manager (Right-click My Computer and click Manage. Then click the Device Manager on the left side):
HID-compliant mouse by Microsoft

Right-click on that entry and click Uninstall.
Then, press the following shortcut on your keyboard:
Alt + a + a
(Press the Alt key, then a, then press a again)

That should have selected, Scan for Hardware Changes. Windows should reinstall that driver automatically for your mouse. Then, let me know the status afterwards.

Thanks, however I cannot reinstall Spybot. I already have SpyBot.exe on my PC and it will not allow me to write over the existing file because I do not have appropriate access/permissions on said file. I also cannot delete or rename the file.

I did the above for the mouse. The rear mouse port is still non-responsive. I have tried different mice as well.

Thanks again DragonMaster Jay!
