Malware infection

Post by spollock on 1st October 2009, 1:51 pm

Hi,

I was infected with AntiVirus Pro 2010 a couple of days ago and I've tried a variety of scanners/cleaners before discovering your site. I had been using the corp edition of Symantec and have run Spyware Doctor, Combofix, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. At times, it seemed as though I was making some progress, but then Internet Explorer started acting strangely...Google searches returned a few alphanumeric characters in the upper left of a white page. It's been one step ahead and three back over the last two days.

At one point, I was able to run a full Malwarebytes scan, but it seems as though that has somehow been disabled. If I try to reinstall it, I can see the files being written to the folder window and the last step is that the executable becomes deleted. Somehow, I've been left with a single file in that folder...mbamext.dll. I've not been able to delete this file even when in safe mode. Access is denied.

Prior to seeing the "read this before posting", I had begun to follow the procedure in a thread here named "Total Security Help" from 9/18. I'd gotten as far as dropping CFScript.txt onto Combofixe.exe for a second scan. I've pasted the most recent CF log below the HijackThis output below if that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Steve

This site is an absoƖute amazing resource! I can't thank you enough for all of your help. I've left a donation as a small token of my gratitude.

Do you have a FAQ that would lay out a good strategy in protecting myself from these types of infections in the future?

Thanks once again,

Steve

Re: Malware infection

Post by Doctor Inferno on 2nd October 2009, 1:24 am

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
