Total Security and More?

Post by Ravax on 22nd September 2009, 2:37 pm

Hi. I'm experiencing quite a frustrating problem. One of the computers here has become infected with Total Security. I used Malwarebytes last week to remove it and all seemed to go well. The same user either has gotten it again or it was never fully gone, I don't know which.

In any case, it's come back with a vengeance. This time around, I can open no other program. That's technically not true. I can open a program but it immediately closes. Including the Task Manager and regedit. Given this, I figured it'd be better to proceed in safe mode. Each time I try to start in safe mode, however, the computer reboots in the middle of preparing the files to start the operating system.

I'm truly at a loss here. I'm not sure what I can do. Have any ideas?

Edit: I have tried to install other programs to help in disinfection, as well. Even after renaming the installation program before transferring it to the infected PC, I can not run the executable.

Nope. In some cases I see the intended window flash briefly before it's closed. The opening of the window is only about half a second typically though often it doesn't get even that far.

Ah, okay. Lets try running this.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

As far as I can tell, the same thing is happening. There's a "pop" sound (user configured to sound when a window is closed) whenever I try to open another program and it's making the same sound when I try to open the script. Nothing other than that happens

Like I said, any program, whether I rename it or not, does not run. The only program that does is explorer or firefox. This did not work as well.

Lets try an online scan then.

Please use the Internet Explorer and run a BitDefender Online scan from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Please check I agree with the Terms and Conditions and click Start Here
  • You will need to allow an Active X install for the scan to run.
  • Leave the scanning options at default and click Start Scan
Please post the results in your next reply.

Have tried to run this scan. While it did manage to boot up and scan for about half an hour, I've been prevented from completing the scan twice at about the half hour point each time.

Once everything closed and the resolution of the screen changed. No icons were visible, no start button and no access to change the resolution by right clicking the desktop image. I powered the computer down and rebooted to try again.

Second try just closed all the internet explorer windows after half an hour.
