Unknown Malware Redirects Searches and Stops Scans

Post by Magister on Tue Sep 22, 2009 8:41 am

So despite my best efforts, my computer was recently hit by a virus. Here are the issues:

1: Redirects google to shady sites: first noticed when I was trying to view a University website and got redirected to an education search engine.

2: Stops scans of the system: any time I try to scan the system with anything (Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVG, HijackThis), the program is shut down and blocked with the message: "Windows Cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I also cannot uninstall the programs in question. I receive a message notifying me that some files could not be removed. When I try manually, they are reported as being 'in use.'

So after officially running out of ideas and unable to create my log through usual habits (systemlog is likewise being tampered with), I turn to you. Thanks in advance.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cngaudit.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Hello.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight the following:

    Ask Toolbar
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15

  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hello.
Missed something. Repear the old instructions for uninstalling Java, and uninstall "Java(TM) 6 Update 5"
Next,

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0579B4B6-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Ask Search Assistant BHO - {0579B4B1-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe (file missing)

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

How is the machine running now?

Machine is working well. I'm still not able to uninstall/access the programs that were shut down originally (i.e. Spybot). Is there a way to uninstall/modify them or should I use a new directory for install?

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

  • Please download Junction.zip and save it.
  • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
  • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:

    cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  • A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

I've never uploaded to a forum before and the post is too long. How do I go about it?

Hello.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] file.

  • Please download this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click, and select > Copy, place it to next the following 3 files.

    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy2\SpybotSD.exe
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

  • Drag each exe file one by one into inherit.exe and let it run.
  • Wait for it to say OK and now the 2 programs should work.

It worked for HijackThis, but the .exe for Spybot isn't dȋsplay: it looks like the folder is empty.

Uninstall Spybot, then re-install it.

I tried to, but I encountered a problem. When uninstalling, the uninstall noted that there were elements that could not be uninstalled and would have to be deleted manually. When I attempted to do so, I encountered the error that the .exe files were currently being used by another program. Trying again, I got the error that I need permission to perform that action.

I tried to install the program over the directory, but then got the error that SpybotSD.exe is a read only and cannot be overwritten.

Hello.
Your log shows there is 2 Spybot locations. If it's still on your uninstall list, lets remove it by using this. If not, we'll use something more powerful to remove the folder all together.

Please download Revo Uninstall from here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  1. Download and run the setup file for Revo Uninstaller.
  2. Once setup, run Revo Uninstaller.
  3. Select the following item for removal by clicking on it once.

    Spybot Search & Destroy

  4. Then hit the "Uninstall" button at the top.
  5. Close Revo Uninstaller.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Folders to delete:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy2
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy

Hello.
Both folders have gone now, including the things inside them.

Can you re-install Spybot now?
