Something Bad Happened

Post by Melancholy on 20th September 2009, 5:28 pm

Okay, here's the deal. My kid brought me his laptop (an HP tablet running Vista Home Premium) and said he needed help. Internet explorer will not open, Norton will not open. In fact, no .exe files will open.

I tried downloading a different anti-virus on a disc and installing it from disc....nope. Wouldn't even open the file cuz it was an .exe file.

If you can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Update: Apparently, he went to a site called "active hackers . com" and a window popped up saying he needed to update adobe flash player and then everything started shutting down.

I dunno if something can be done, but this is where he thinks it came from. And yes, he is in big trouble.

Oh yeah, and the mouse doesn't even work. Called a geek friend of mine. He suggested doing a system restore. Should I?

System restore *might* work depending on if the restore point is infected or not, but I guess it can't hurt to try, especially if the mouse isn't working.

Should I back up files or no? Is it possible that I would be backing up the virus?

No, don't back anything up, I can't tell if they are infected also or not.

Then I'll just restore to factory settings since it's possible he got it before last night. Might also teach him a lesson about visiting sites like that one.
