PC seems to have gone bananas :(

Post by Peewiglet on 12th September 2009, 2:30 pm

Hi,

For no apparent reason my PC seems to have suddenly gone bananas. The initial symptom was that I couldn't get AudibleManager to load, and once I'd got that sorted out it wouldn't tranfer a file to my MP3 player. It normally works perfectly. I tried to get round it by doing a Copy/Paste from my Audible library files to the MP3 player but Copy/Paste won't work properly. Explorer keeps crashing. I don't know what's going on but I'm hoping you can see something in my Hijackthis log. Many thanks for any help.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hi there,

Many thanks for helping.

I've just run Malwarebytes. (I already had it, but have updated it.) It said it found nothing, as follows.

p.s. I actually ran it earlier today, before posting here, and it said it found a trojan. I've posted the log that it made below, in case it suggests anything to you.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt just yet.

Hello.
I don't think this is malware related.

The explorer error could be caused by lots of thing hogging your CPU.

Please post a new Hijack This log.

Hello there,

It does seem to have settled down now. I'm sorry to have taken up your time with it if it's not malware related. It was so odd, though, that I thought it might be. Here's the new Hijack This log. Thanks once again for your help.

Hello.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

I recommend you remove the Java Quick Starter because it's not needed.
To do so, follow these instructions.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Java.
In the Java control panel, open the click the Advanced tab. Click the + in front of Miscellaneous and uncheck the Java Quick Starter box.

See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for more info.

Reboot normally.
The performance should be somewhat increased now, let me know how it feels now.
