Slow PC

Post by ginacee on 29th August 2009, 8:33 pm

Hello Geek Police. I want to speed up my PC. I did a scan using HiJack This and I would like to know if I should fix or remove any of these items. Also, is there any software that I can use to clean things up so I don't have to wait 3-4 minutes for a simple Word document to open?

ok first off if u have not alredy install and run a program called cclener
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Process u should close:
(open the run command and type in msconfig then go to the start up tab)
C:\Program Files\Canon\CAL\CALMAIN.exe
C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\pptd40nt.exe
there are others im sure some one else will point out.
if u see any other programs on the list that u know u do not use just untick them but leave all microsoft proceses.
What i would do it compleatly wipe your computer and reinstall windows (backing up all your files first)
If u need anymore help just reply and ill be sure to look

Hello,

I would like to recommend some startup items that can be removed.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MoneyStartUp10.0] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Activation.exe"MoneyStartUp10
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exeProgram
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottimeTask
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -bootSSBkgdUpdate
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZO~1\HELPSU~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exePROGRA
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [readericon10] C:\Program Files\Multimedia Card Reader\readericon10.exeProgram
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe]

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.
Please download and run this tool.

Thanks. That helped a lot. Word and Adobe documents open up quickly now.
But if I decide to wipe my system clean and start over, how do I do that?
I know I have to save My Documents and probably all of my settings. But then what?

Thanks, but what I really want to do is what Davedudeit suggested.

What i would do it completly wipe your computer and reinstall windows (backing up all your files first)

Sounds like a monumental task but if I can extend the life of this 7 year old computer, I would like to do that.
