McAfee gave up on us-

Post by Tigerlilly77 on Sat Aug 15, 2009 1:01 pm

I have posted before about the problems I experience with my computer. I appreciate all of the hard work and your time but I became hopeless and even more-so now. I called to have McAfee reinstall my program that my husband had purchased last year...I needed assistance because I kept getting redirecting online, etc. The technician was having difficulty as well and informed me that it was because of "very dangerous malware, adware and it will destroy your computer". Next thing you know, I shelled over $89.95 (I'm unemployed and broke) to have it fixed remotely by a professional.

I'm not sure if he realized I was watching him...he deleted about 10 files, performed a quick scan and restored all of my defaults within my Internet Options folder. I thought he took a break, but he never came back- he was done. Total time- 15 mins. at best. I called McAfee and he cliamed that our computer is now virus-free. I told them that I could have had my neighbor come over and do a better job than that for free. ( After an hour of arguing, I got a refund Bow or Thanks )

Long story short- we still can't download McAfee (even though we are "virus-free") and our computer will not allow me to download or open any applications now. A very commom error popup "The system could not find the environment option that was entered". This warning pops up on almost everything I try to open. The McAfee technician also left [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] folder up and open on my desktop. There is so much information and so many codes that I have searched online for---all bad. Why did they leave us hanging? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize our computer is infected.

Is it time to wipe it clean? ( I don't know the terminology ) Thank you for reading! Tigerlilly

Mcafee is a resource hog anyway, I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.

I left you instructions so I could see what was installed, but you never answered it. If you want to wipe clean, that is your decision to do so, we can help you along that route if you would rather do that.

Hello Belahzur- Yup, McAfee should be ashamed of themselves. I have had to re-type this reply because the original has vanished, which I noticed when I went to "preview" it. This is a perfect example of what would happen when you were helping me out last week- I would send you logs and the logs were not there- I would send a note that you wouldn't receive...Is it possible for 3rd party interception??? Seriously. I may even have to log in for a fourth time....who knows?
I don't want to wipeout my computer Sad tearing. I am just left with the question...can these problems be solved?
**I don't want to write too-too much incase I must re-re-write

Hello.
Sorry for the delay, been so busy.

I seriously do need to see what's installed, your log shows you have two AV (antivirus) present, which can be dangerous.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight Java(TM) 6 Update 7
  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Norton installed, along with AVG. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Norton to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Completely Uninstall Norton software using:

Instructions

  1. Please download and save SymNRT.exe to your desktop.
  2. Close all programs and double click on the tool.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer if asked.
  5. Then delete the SymNRT.exe tool from your desktop.
  6. Open the Program Files folder on your local disk ( normally C: )
  7. Find and delete the following folders (if present):

    • Norton AntiVirus
    • Norton Internet Security
    • Norton SystemWorks
    • Norton Personal Firewall

Reboot normally now.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

@echo off
echo %path% >> log.txt
start notepad log.txt

Save this as fix.bat, save it to your desktop.
Double click fix.bat and the black cmd window will open and close, this is normal.

Post the contents of log.txt back here.

Bad news

Post by Tigerlilly77 on Tue Aug 18, 2009 11:03 pm

Well...
1st Step results: UNINSTALLING JAVA: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

2nd step results: SymNRT.exe: C:\users\Lauren\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IES\EB69ZLCA\SymNRT[1].exe
" The system could not find the environment option that was entered"

Belahzur, please keep in mind that Norton popped up on its own one day (I never installed it) and AVG was installed by me but is simply an icon and folder...this looks pretty bad, huh? Firefox isn't Firefox either if THAT makes any sense??

GO AFTER THE RICH!!! Anyway- I figure the sooner the better...Please help. THANK MY PATIENT HELPER!

Hi Belahzur-
No error signs yet, but the norm is that hidden folders start creeping up as well as users and other strange "things" that weren't present before...the quite before the storm.
It took the gentleman at HP 1/2 to access the correct website and roughly 1/2 to gain control of my computer. He was so thorough that I can't believe something could slime by. I sensed he had doubts before signing off as well...
Did you see any red flags? Why? Why? WHY?

Hello.
I didn't see any malware red flags if that's what you were talking about.

The HP guy probably fixed more than I could since he used remote access, but we here don't believe in that, reason being that we could stumble across sensitive data like passwords and such. Trust me, I'll stumbled across things on logs that people wouldn't want me to find. LMBO or ROFL

I'm sure you could write a book on some of the things you've come across!
My concern is that I feel someone has already gained access/control of my computer again- I have run another log, I'm not sure if this can detect this sort of thing? Thanks VERY much.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
