Possible hard drive trouble?

Post by Scorch on 7th August 2009, 3:24 pm

Hello,

I am trying to diagnose an issue with a Dell notebook computer. It is an Inspiron 6000. Everything seems to run extremely slow. I am wondering if the hard drive may be the issue. I have noticed that the computer has seemed to be getting progressively slower. However, I noticed the other evening while I was trying to download some PDF files that it took forever.

Is there a way to tell if the hard drive is beginning to slow down? According to the system information, it is a 55GB drive that is 24GB used, 30GB free.

Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00

I ran the defragment tool the other day even though it said it was not required, and it ran the program extremely slow and took a long time to run.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I doubt it's any hard drive issue. This most probably happens to a corrupted Windows most of the time, you can try to perform a repair of your OS with your recovery CD and see if it fixes the problem.

Is that using the re-installation CD that came with the computer?

Is there anything special that I need to be concerned about while reinstalling windows?

If you are reinstalling Windows then all your data will be gone, it will be returned to it's factory state like when you first bought it. But in this case, lets try a repair first, where all your data will not be touched.

The CD that I have says Reinstallation CD. When I put it in the drive the options are: Install Windows XP, Learn more about the setup process, install optional windows components, perform additional tasks, check system compatibility.

you will need to boot from the CD instead of trying to do within windows.
