System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

Post by bnasexton on 5th August 2009, 10:12 pm

Last night, somehow, we got the stupid system security 2009 and some AV Care virus or whatever it is. I messed with the computer for hours. It does just like everyone else says but mine has locked me from getting on the internet. The screen opens when I click on intenet explorer but it says that it cannot display the webpage. It can't display ANY webpage! Anyway, my point is that I can't download any of the antimalware stuff from my laptop. I've been using my desktop to get information. On my laptop (which is what is infected) I went to search under the start menu and clicked on all files and folders. I typed in system security and then separately AV Care. I deleted all of the files that it would let me delete. Some of them it didn't give me the option to delete. It said extract files or copy and I didn't think I wanted to do any of that. I have done all of this in safe mode. I don't know if that makes a difference but that is the only place I could even open anything up without the system security popping up and blocking me from doing anything. Help please!

Just wanted to add that I have now tried twice to log on to Windows NOT in safe mode and it won't let me past the screen where you choose which user you want to log on to.

OK...I am steadily just trying stuff that I am reading and maybe soon I'll hear from a tech or something. I am trying to install malwarebytes from USB but currently it is not working. However, I was able to install Hijackthis from USB and got this:

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

Post by bnasexton on 6th August 2009, 2:43 am

Oh my geez! I am actually able to get onto the internet for the moment. I started windows using the last known good config. It's still not acting right and malwarebytes' won't do anything. I'm sure I've changed something so I'm resending the hijackthis thing again...then maybe I'll leave the computer alone until I hear from someone. That's what I need to do, right? lol

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

Hello.

You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Norton/Symantec installed, along with Avira. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Symantec to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Completely Uninstall Norton software using:

Instructions

  1. Please download and save SymNRT.exe to your desktop.
  2. Close all programs and double click on the tool.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer if asked.
  5. Then delete the SymNRT.exe tool from your desktop.
  6. Open the Program Files folder on your local disk ( normally C: )
  7. Find and delete the following folders (if present):

    • Norton AntiVirus
    • Norton Internet Security
    • Norton SystemWorks
    • Norton Personal Firewall

After that, post a new Hijack This log.

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

OK...I double clicked on that tool and attempted to run the program. It pretty much stalled for like 2 hours. I couldn't close it or open task manager or shut down from the start menu so I just powered it off. I powered it back on in normal mode but, of course, all I had was a blue screen. I was able to shut it down from the task manager and powered it back on in safe mode with networking. I ran the program with no problems this time. I restarted in normal mode and followed your aformentioned instructions. The only file I saw that said Norton was Norton Security Scan so I deleted it. Here is my hjt log:

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

I tried to install Malwarebytes Antimalware before (when I first posted my help topic) but it wouldn't open. I tried to uninstall it from the add/remove programs icon in the control panel prior to reinstalling by clicking the link you posted but it wouldn't let me uninstall. It would just never progress. So I just clicked on your link and hoped it would overwrite the existing file. It would freeze up at extracting files and would never go any further. I tried again to open Malwarebytes Antimalware that was previously installed and it still won't open.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Combofix is saying that my Avira AV is still enabled when I have already disabled it. I was going to proceed but it gave a warning that seemed pretty serious about causing damage to the computer. Do I need to proceed anyway?

Did you disable it right? I use Avira too, you just need to right click the icon in the corner and turn off the guard.

You right click and click on disable and it shows a closed umbrella. That's all, right? It says guard inactive.

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

Post by bnasexton on 9th August 2009, 3:24 am

OK...well I went ahead and disabled Avira again. I was unable to disable Malwarebytes Anti-Malware because I can't open it and I have been unable to delete it either. I ran ComboFix and, boy, did it give me a lot of errors. There was one about not having enough memory in the blue screen. It gave me another error then...ugh...my computer went into some kind of hibernate mode. I brought the screen back up and it continued to run but now I realize that the Avira, after bringing the screen back up, was not disabled again. I didn't have the option. ComboFix was just running away. I don't know if this makes any difference or not but I got a message that said that C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\TEMP\Update\tmp_update (I wrote that down so it may not be exactly correct) is corrupt and unreadable. It said to run chkdsk utility. I clicked OK. I don't know if it ran itself or not. I don't know how to run it if it didn't. I actually got this message SEVERAL times. I'm sorry this is so much junk! Thanks so much for helping. I will post the ComboFix log in the next message.

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

How is the machine running now?

Re: System Security 2009 and AV Care-can't get on internet

So far, it seems to be running well. I uninstalled Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just incase something wasn't right when I installed it the first time. Then I reinstalled it from a post you did earlier. I am running a full scan now. (I am on my desktop this minute.) So, have we completely removed the System Security 2009 and AV Care? I know I did a lot of stuff prior to your WONDERFUL help but I really have no idea if I helped or hurt matters. Anyway, I will let you know the results of the scan when it is complete.

Well, I ran the Mbam and I had 3 infected files...one of them being the AV Care crap. Anyway, I deleted all 3 files. Computer seems to be running well. I haven't a clue as to what we (really, you) did but thanks!!! I will do my best to make a donation when I can and I will pass the word on about this site.
