Solved Computer won't go on standby

Post by grasshoper on Sun Jun 21, 2009 10:33 am

Hi there,

Recently, my windows xp desktop computer will not go on standby. I have set the time in properties to go on standby in 1 hour and hibernate in 2 hours, however i'll come back in 3 hours and the computer is still running fully. I have scanned for viruses, and spyware, so thats not the problem. Could it have something to do with the network? I have a feeling that the computer is causing my network storage device to automatically turn on. The network storage is set to turn off if no activity has happened in half an hour, and it turns off. However i will sometimes notice it randomly turn on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps!

Hello,

You are using Windows Vista SP1 32-bit right? Let's try to download hotfix KB 928631:

http://drop.io/hvqbhiv/asset/windows6-0-kb928631-v2-x86-msu-2

Once downloaded, run it. Let me know how it goes.

Hello, you can try the standby option in the shutdown menu, if it works, then there is a certain process which is running that is blocking your PC from going on standby mode. Might be an antivirus scanning in the background or something like that.

Hi there,

Thanks for your response. The computer goes into standby manually fine. So it must be a software program?

I recently installed avira antivirus, though not sure if the problem happened before the installation of that. Thing is, it never goes into standby, i have just tried setting standby time to one minute but it won't go into standby. I also made sure avira is not running or scheduled to run any scans. What other programs could it be?

Hello,

I would guess it's one of the programs with real time scanning like Avira or Ad-Aware.

Try disabling Avira and see how.

Hi there,

I uninstalled avira and that seemed to resolve the problem after a restart. So I installed avg but the problem is now back again! So the issue seems to be with anti-virus software. This is really annoying me! I also uninstalled ad-aware but that didn't do anything.

What else can I try?

Thanks!

Hello,

This strange, your computer for some reason won't go on standby when an antivirus is running. If you uninstall AVg it might solve the problem, but you need to have an AV running. Try to uninstall AVG and install Avast instead, see how it goes.
