svchost.exe

Post by Voods on Fri Jun 19, 2009 3:40 pm

I know your are supposed to have around 5 of these processes, bur I have a couple more. I have run a svchost analyser, maybe not the most acurate tool, but It reports back that two of these don't belong to windows, and there is an error reading these two.

It says run again as administrator, even though I am. I do get crashes sometime on reboot/boot up, and it takes 2-3 attempts to load properl. Often it seems as if something is heavily acessing the drive, even though no programs are running.
Apart from this, I don't seem to have any problems, just the high processor usage..

Any help would be appreciated

Regards

Dave

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Ask.com Toolbar BHO - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Ask.com Toolbar - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV. (Mcafee)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Re: svchost.exe

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

RegNull::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1644491937-1580818891-1343024091-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{F7EDF9E3-95EB-FA8E-D180-702F5DA82676}*]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Hello.
The last Combofix log shows NOD32 was disabled when run, so yes, keep it disabled.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

How is the machine running now?

I hve done that.. Do I not still need to follow the last step from Belahzur?

The computer seems to boot faster, I'll run it over the day and see if how things run, and will post back.

Out of interest, what problems, major/minor did you come across?

No that last step deleted ComboFix which you have already done. The computer just had a couple of malicious files and one drive that caused it to slow down.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

It seems to load faster, but are about 20 instances of catchme files picked up as trojans in the registry keys.
Theres also a catchme.sys in the temp folder.

Also theres strange entries called system policies, under the hi-jacker category.

Are these from combofix? As they wern't there before.

I did this particular scan with Stopzilla after a reboot..

STOPZilla finds catchme? just ignore it then, false positive. Catchme is a userland rootkit scanner.

Well after giving my computer a couple of days, It has crashed 5 times, 4 of which when I was in firefox, the computer just literally freezes, no mouse movement or keyboard function. I have to switch off and reboot..

Don't know if it's realated to the last problem or not.

Any ideas?
