unknown malware

Post by Brownie54 on 12th June 2009, 4:59 pm

I'm not sure what type of malware is on my computer but here are my facts. My blog was showing just a page with an error so I contacted my webserver which is Hostgator. They suggested that I run malwarebytes and ComboFix. Their email stated that "It appears that malicious code has been uploaded to your account via FTP using a compromised username and password. At this time, I have removed the malicious code from the account.
From our experience with malware of this nature, the user account passwords are compromised through viruses/malware located on your local computer. This malware sniffs out passwords used and stored by FTP programs, located on the computer. In order to protect against future attack, you will need to run full virus and malware scans on your computers to ensure that they are clean. I recommend using mulitiple scanners as we have found that some scanners do not detect the malware.
MalwareBytes and ComboFix have been reported to be able to clean this malware.

After this is done change passwords."

I have run malwarebytes on my desktop and my laptop no infections found. On my desktop I also ran Ad-Aware and Spybot - again no infections.

Following is a copy of Hi-Jack this from my desktop. Will I need to also do one from my laptop? My desktop is running windowsXP and my laptop is running Vista.

Re: unknown malware

Post by Belahzur on 12th June 2009, 5:07 pm

Hello.

"MalwareBytes and ComboFix have been reported to be able to clean this malware."

Combofix has also been reported to trash machines because it is EXTREMELY powerful, and shouldn't be used without a trained staff member watching over you.

DO NOT run Combofix unless I ask you to.

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean. Please see here for instructions on how to disable it:

1. Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray (located down by the system clock for most configurations)
2. Choose *Settings* from the dropdown menu
3. Under the *General Settings* tab turn OFF (red x) the option to "Load Ad-Watch at Startup" (if enabled)

4. Click on the *Status* button in the left hand menu
5. Turn OFF (red x) the option for *Regshield*
6. Close that window, then right-click on the Ad-Watch icon shield again down in the system tray next to the clock.
7. Choose *Turn off Ad-Watch* from the drop menu

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
    O1 - Hosts: 94.232.248.66 browser-security.microsoft.com
    O1 - Hosts: 94.232.248.66 antivaresys.com
O1 - Hosts: 94.232.248.66 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Yes, disable adaware then.
If MBAM is already installed, just open it up, update the database, then run a scan.
