I had the same problem.

I went and deleted the following file: WINDOWS\system32\desot.exe

then found that I could not run any executable files.

I went here http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

and downloaded and ran "EXE File Association Fix"

that seemed to fix it and I was able to then install Anti-Malware

The instructions are pretty generic, let me help those of you who can't install this!

ctrl+alt+delete first to get that task manager up.
end windows antivirus pro.exe
THEN quickly install the program (MAM).

You may have to check a box along the lines of show system processes if you are on vista.

This is if the file you download here will not open because the virus is blocking it.

After having to open my computer in SafeMode and starting "Malwarebytes" (by changing the .exe file name) I was able to detect and remove the program. I then ran AVG and SuperAntispyware to detect any viruses. But after restarting in normal mode I again recieved a critical message showing I was infected with the Win32/Crytor virus. After restarting in safe mode and going through everything again it keeps coming back, HELP!

Okay, so I had installed this previously for another infection (I know, dumb of me to get it TWICE), but here's some help:

IF WINDOWS POLICE PRO WON'T LET YOU OPEN ANY PROGRAMS... Open the Windows Task Manager (If it doesn't block it), then select Windows Police Pro (or whatever) and click on "End Task", then quickly click on the program you want to open. For me, it was Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. And now it's running freely on my computer, scanning ALL my files (because I'm paranoid like that) and already found objects infected.

I think everyone should download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware just in case it ever happens. It's VERY helpful.

I cannot open the Task Mgr. either, but I did download & use the Malwarebytes. My computer is working well, so far. Yesterday I couldn't access my Avast or my System Restore, unless I restarted my computer immediatly before clicking the icon. Avast captured some of the problem, & today my computer woked well enough to find help here. The malware was trying to block me from accessing various websites, but the site was always behind a blank page. Thanks for your help, Bill
