Search is a lot about discovery—the basic human need to learn and broaden your horizons. But searching still requires a lot of hard work by you, the user. So today I’m really excited to launch the Knowledge Graph, which will help you discover new information quickly and easily.

Take a query like [taj mahal]. For more than four decades, search has essentially been about matching keywords to queries. To a search engine the words [taj mahal] have been just that—two words.

But we all know that [taj mahal] has a much richer meaning. You might think of one of the world’s most beautiful...

The Wikimedia Foundation is warning its millions of visitors that if they're seeing ads appearing on any of the Foundation's Web sites, then their computer is probably infected with malware.

The Foundation issued a statement on Monday clarifying that it never runs ads on the Web site for Wikipedia, the massive, crowd-sourced encyclopedia. Visitors who are seeing ads for for-profit firms have likely been the victim of a Web based attack, including malicious browser plug-ins, the statement reads.

A variety of malicious browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer...

A U.S. Senator's bill to broaden cybersecurity intelligence gathering is in trouble after other legislators question whether proposed protections comes at the expense of citizens' privacy.

The bill introduced by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to strengthen cybersecurity through better public-private information sharing is the latest congressional proposal to come into the crosshairs of civil liberties groups and privacy advocates. Their campaign to stop passage of the bill as it is currently written may be working, given statements released this week from Lieberman's congressional counterparts.

Do Google and other search engines have a constitutional right to control their own search results?

The answer is yes, at least in the opinion of UCLA law professor and First Amendment scholar Eugene Volokh.

In a report commissioned by the search giant, Volokh asserted that search results are a type of "opinion" based on what information the search engines believe would be most relevant to their users, according to PaidContent. Therefore, the results are protected by the First Amendment.

The average time spent accessing Facebook via smartphone in the United States was 441 minutes in March, compared with 391 minutes via computer, according to comScore, underscoring the increasingly high-profile role of mobile in social networking.

comScore's new Mobile Metrix 2.0 report showed U.S. smartphone users spent 441 minutes per month, or 7 hours and 21 minutes, on Facebook in March. That compares with 391 minutes, or 6 hours and 31 minutes, for people who tapped into Facebook via a computer.

Most of the large online brokerage firms, including E-Trade, Fidelity and Charles Schwab, are allowing customers to request shares of the Facebook initial public offering. It's the latest phase in kicking off what's expected to be the largest technology IPO next week.

Given the large degree of attention on this IPO, though, investors shouldn't expect to actually get shares or make money on them. "I anticipate there to be many orders relative to the number of shares available to allocate," says Jay Ritter, professor of finance at the University of Florida.

The FBI is asking Internet companies not to oppose a controversial proposal that would require firms, including Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, and Google, to build in backdoors for government surveillance.

In meetings with industry representatives, the White House, and U.S. senators, senior FBI officials argue the dramatic shift in communication from the telephone system to the Internet has made it far more difficult for agents to wiretap Americans suspected of illegal activities, CNET has learned.

The FBI general counsel's office has drafted a proposed law that...

Allowing underage individuals into a bar or club can have a devastating effect on that business, with fines, license suspensions, and even criminal charges hitting the owner hard. It’s not always easy to verify identification, so some enterprising bouncers in the U.K. have started matching up Facebook accounts to IDs.

Some bouncers have demanded that patrons log in to Facebook using their smartphone to make sure they are not using a fake ID.

On a few occasions, bouncers have asked to see Charlotte Neal’s phone to make sure her Facebook account matched her driver’s licence.

In the wake of a multi-million-dollar online scam, more than 300,000 computer users worldwide could find themselves without Web access this summer.

Luckily for them, it will only take a few clicks to clean things up.

The FBI announced that it's created a website where users can check whether they're infected with malware and remove it if they are. Check your computer here -- More: http://www.dcwg.org. The site was at times difficult to access on Monday, presumably due to heavy traffic.

Target Corp said on Wednesday it will stop selling Amazon.com Inc's Kindle devices, the latest in a series of brawls between the companies fueled by Amazon's increasing competition with brick and mortar retailers.

"Target is phasing out Amazon- and Kindle-branded products in the spring of 2012," Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder wrote in an email to Reuters. "We will continue to offer our guests a full assortment of e-readers and supporting accessories."

The decision includes Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablet,...

In a recent interview with Computer Business Review's Steve Evans, Kaspersky Lab founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky said Apple is "10 years behind Microsoft in terms of security."

"Apple is now entering the same world as Microsoft has been in for more than 10 years: updates, security patches and so on," Kaspersky said. "We now expect to see more and more because cyber criminals learn from success and [Flashback] was the first successful one."

"Kaspersky suggested that OS X's relatively low incidence of malware over the last...

The Titan II is yet another success for the hardware team over at HTC. It feels excellent in the hand, even if it’s huge, has a nice balanced weight to it, and the little chin at the bottom gives it some extra pizazz when lined up against other designs on store shelves. It calls to me.

But there are a few issues, as is the case with most any phone. The first, and most important one, is the screen size vs. resolution. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Microsoft, please push out Apollo so that your hardware partners aren’t stuck slapping a 480×800 WP build onto a massive display.

When people upload a file to the new Google Drive online file-storage service, who owns the file?

For answers, one might turn to the unified terms of service that cover all Google products: "When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations, or other changes that we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display, and distribute...

A Dutch company that issues digital certificates used to authenticate websites said late Tuesday that several dozen other websites in addition to Google have been affected by a security breach.

The company, DigiNotar, issues SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and EVSSL (Extended Validation) certificates, which are validated by Web browsers to ensure people are not visiting a fake website that is trying to appear legitimate.

DigiNotar is what's called a Certificate Authority (CA), an entity that sells digital certificates to legitimate website owners. But DigiNotar issued a digital...

If you notice faster delivery of Web content today, consider yourself more than just lucky. In fact, you may well be a beneficiary of the Global Internet Speedup, a new, Google-backed effort to speed up the Web around the world.

The Global Internet Speedup was announced on Tuesday by OpenDNS--a key provider of domain name system (DNS) and Internet security services--along with Google and other leading content delivery networks (CDNs). Basically, it aims to make the Web faster for many users by more intelligently routing page requests to local servers.

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the coming of iTunes Match at June's Worldwide Developers Conference, there wasn't a single word about a long-awaited streaming-music feature.

For over a year, music industry sources told CNET that Apple had sought licenses from the four major labels to build a cloud music service that would allow the company to scan a user's hard drive, and then stream their entire music library from Apple's servers back to the user via any Web-connected device.

On Monday, the streaming feature finally poked its head up. Apple launched the iTunes Match...

Three weeks after launching a bug bounty program that pays Web hackers cash for finding flaws with its website, Facebook said it has paid out more than $40,000 in rewards.

Facebook called the program a success Monday, saying it has mobilized security researchers around the world to help make Facebook.com more secure. "We know and have relationships with a large number of security experts, but this program has kicked off dialogue with a whole new and ever expanding set of people across the globe in over 16 countries, from Turkey to Poland who are passionate about Internet security," the...

Mozilla is expanding development of Firefox for Android with new efforts to improve its performance, lower its power consumption, adapt it for tablets--and keep the browser maker relevant in the hottest area of computing.

Firefox is the second-most widely used browser on computers, but things are different in the mobile arena. There, Firefox is at a serious disadvantage compared to mobile browsers such as Apple's Safari and Google's unbranded Android browser that are built into the operating systems.

Mozilla, by comparison, must convince people or phone makers to install Firefox,...

Microsoft today said it will "ribbonize" the file manager in next year's Windows 8, adding Explorer to the short list of integrated applications that already sport the interface in Windows 7.

In another post in a series the company has been using to disclose some Windows 8 details, Microsoft's Alex Simons, director of program management, showed screenshots of the new ribbon interface planned for Explorer.

"We evaluated several different UI [user interface] command affordances including expanded versions of the Vista/Windows 7 command bar, Windows 95/Windows XP style toolbars...

Facebook has made a few small but helpful improvements to its Photos feature.

Noting in a blog Friday that more than 250 million photos are uploaded every day, Facebook said it's always looking for ways to enhance the feature.

One improvement rolled out last week displays your uploaded photos at a higher resolution. Images will now appear at 960 pixels, compared with the prior size of 720 pixels, which means photos will be sharper and more detailed. Any photos you've already uploaded to the site will automatically appear at the higher resolution.

Apparently the age of "superpoking" social network friends and throwing sheep at them is coming to a close.

Google plans to shut down the social applications developed by Slide, a company it acquired a year ago for US$182 million. Slide products include SuperPoke and photo management and decorating tools like Slideshow and FunPix.

Slide's applications like Slideshow were very popular on MySpace during its heyday, and found success on other social networking sites, including Facebook, where the sheep-throwing feature of SuperPoke caught on, entertaining and annoying many.

Twitter is slowly turning on automatic encryption on its website, a move following other major providers of web-based services to thwart account hijacking over wireless networks.

Twitter has offered an option for users to turn on SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption, but said on Tuesday that it will turn the feature on by default for some users. It did not indicate when the option would be turned on by default for all users.

SSL encryption, indicted by "https" in the URL bar and sometimes a padlock in the browser window, is an encryption protocol used to protect communication...
